On the evening of February 18, 2025, a harrowing incident unfolded at the intersection of East Pratt and Charles Streets in Baltimore's Butchers Hill neighborhood. Surveillance footage captured an Amazon delivery van striking a 29-year-old woman as she crossed the street. The vehicle, after stopping at a red light, accelerated when the light turned green, hitting the pedestrian and dragging her several feet. Despite the victim's screams, the driver briefly paused, then ran over her again with the back wheels before fleeing the scene.
The victim sustained serious injuries, including nine broken ribs and multiple fractures, but is expected to survive. Residents in the area have expressed ongoing concerns about speeding and reckless driving, emphasizing the need for increased traffic safety measures.
The driver, identified as 26-year-old Jerome Young, later surrendered to authorities. Charging documents reveal that after the collision, Young exited the vehicle and questioned the injured woman about how she had been hit, before fleeing the scene. He now faces multiple charges, including failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, reckless driving, and failure to render assistance to the injured person.
Amazon has suspended Young pending the outcome of the investigation and is cooperating with law enforcement. This incident has sparked discussions about driver training and safety protocols for delivery services operating in urban areas.
